A.Spell move boldly into new territory. Their latest recording threads tales of queens and emperors, grey moons and dark places, with glints of gold that hint at a meaning of life. Soundscapes and percussive textures lock into rhythmic, structured compositions; unfamiliar instrument pairings and a wide timbral palette keep the music endlessly intriguing. Distorted, effected bass and contrabass clarinet meet tabla, hybrid drum kit, didgeridoo, and playful electronics—woven together by the warmth of the accordion—to lift an otherworldly voice high above.
