OUT is part exhibition, part concert. It’s like surfing the internet in real life—following links between sound and image, and training yourself to see and hear with intent. Werner Hasler and the musicians of the outer string bring exterior soundscapes and images into the venue. Six recordings made in landscapes and spaces—ad-hoc studios—in Liechtenstein, Bern, and Paris form the project’s core. OUT seeks to make a space’s acoustic dimensions audible—an exploration of sound and spatial perspective. Trumpet, cello, drums, and electronics interweave, veil, and at times push back against the indifferent sonic wash of the outside. Meanwhile, the camera captures the spaces and, at moments, the musicians themselves. The result is an interconnected, multi-dimensional exhibition of video art with live sets. Short films run at the audience’s pace, while six live performances—from solo to quartet—unfold within visuals drawn from the six recordings, inviting a sense of déjà vu between images, music, spaces, and sounds.
