After a long tenure as lead singer and qanun player with the seminal Palestinian group Sabreen, Kamilya Jubran moved to Europe in 2002, continuing to develop an original musical language for her voice and oud. She has broadened the scope of her compositions and texts through numerous projects she has initiated and joined. Werner Hasler and Sarah Murcia appeared on her first solo project, Mahattaat (Switzerland, 2002), and have since become key collaborators. Jubran’s other collaborations include work with Sylvain Cathala, Mela Meierhans, Sawsan Darwaza, Mark Tompkins, and Jon Balke. She is the artistic director and co-founder (Paris, October 2014) of the Zamkana Association, which supports original, innovative artistic projects and advocates freedom of expression and secularism. Sodassi (Arabic for “sextet”)—featuring Youmna Saba, Dina El Wedidi, Maya Khaldi, Ayed Fadel, Rasha Nahas, and Sama’ Abdulhadi—is Zamkana’s first artistic production, launched in 2018.
