Album cover: Balduin - Rainbow Tapes (front)

Rainbow Tapes

Rainbow Tapes is a hand-spun, analog love letter to late-’60s psychedelic studio craft. Tracked to tape in a snow-lit attic studio, these miniatures glow with simple instruments—guitar, xylophone, flute, rattle, children’s keyboard—and, for the first time, Balduin’s own voice. Songs about nutcrackers, snow, cinnamon, mushrooms, fairy tales, the Renaissance—and, of course, rainbows—unfold in brief, vivid scenes. Tape loops run backward and at altered speeds, textures wobble and blur, and the music drifts away from the sleeker contours of his Crippled Dick Hot Wax releases. Intimate, playful, and meticulously analog, Rainbow Tapes feels like opening a box of sun-faded postcards that still hum with color.
