“Midnight Buffet,” the third album by the duo PLESS, circles themes of opulence, hedonism and individualism—a pointed counterweight to the debut “Hypernormal” (’22) and the digital release “Technidolor” (’23). It sketches the retreat of the individual into the smallest possible space, buffered from a hostile outside world: a private utopia, a custom-built hell. What’s missing is completed by fantasy, or repaired with a well-fitted prosthesis. The production is more finely resolved, the emotions more accessible. References to ’90s electronica, synthwave, film scores, West Coast hip-hop and industrial are folded into the alloy of this chassis. Get in, light a menthol, reflect, preheat, pick the right soundtrack and take off—rubber screeching. Or enjoy the soothing solitude of staying parked. Come along.
