Lieus Pers
- by Mathon
Lost Places is an extended photo series by Bern-based photographer Stefan Flükiger, who tracks down abandoned industrial sites and subterranean canals slowly reclaimed by nature. These images—among them Bern’s 17th-century town-hall canal, reputedly an escape route for the city government—inspired Mathon’s sixth release, Lieus Pers. Mathon—Thomas Augustiny, Pete Aurel Leuenberger, and Roger Stucki—created twelve electro-acoustic “sound studies,” recorded in submerged and forsaken locations across Switzerland. Layering field recordings with electronics, they conjure dystopian architectures and a slow, resonant drift that could soundtrack Tarkovsky’s Stalker. The visuals pair Flükiger’s “lost places” with nature imagery from Domleschg, home region of the village of Mathon, dissolving boundaries between ruin and renewal. Guests including Mich Meienberg, Maria Capelli, Nicolas Kellner, Julian Sartorius, and Digitalis extend the palette. Together with the digitally altered photographs, the album becomes a search for traces—bridging image and sound, past and present, nature and technology. Lieus Pers—Rhaeto-Romance for “lost places”—stands as a striking contemporary document, transforming unfamiliar industrial and natural architectures into finely fractured soundscapes.
