On his new double album, Mike Reber aka OP Rechts presents a work split in two stark halves. The first LP delivers a musical reckoning with the present, sketching a bleak portrait of contemporary politics and power structures that sacrifice human rights and democratic values to self-interest.
The second LP turns inward, processing nearly twenty years of illness—strokes, cancer, isolation, anxiety, diabetes, medication and rehabilitation, and the slow return to everyday life. Rooted in musique concrète and avant-garde composition, and using only analogue sound sources and field recordings (with contributions from Bern-based musicians Bassdriver and BlindDoc), OP Rechts shapes a powerful, unsettling and fiercely alive composition about the repressed, the strange and the uncanny—a radical “soundtrack” to a poisoned planet and a different cinema of the mind.
