Annie Aries

Annie Aries (Annie Rüfenacht) is a Swiss–Philippine composer and musician based in Bern, Switzerland. She holds an M.A. in Music & Media Arts from Bern University of the Arts and studied historical musicology at the University of Bern. In 2017 she lived in Berlin and studied Popular Music History & Theory at Humboldt University, focusing on experimental practices within pop and club culture. Since 2019 she has been a faculty member in the Sound Arts department at Bern University of the Arts. Her work has been presented internationally — including the Mis-En Music Festival (Brooklyn, NY), the New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival, ZKM Karlsruhe, IGNM Bern, the International Computer Music Conference (Shenzhen), Gray Area (San Francisco) and Sonic Mountains / Dampfzentrale Bern. Annie composes and performs using a custom-made modular synthesizer, exploring how the instrument enables interplay between generative processes and improvised live performance. Her music pursues a minimal, reduced yet texturally complex sound world, fusing contemporary electronica, club and synthesizer traditions with experimental strategies drawn from contemporary music.
