Album cover: Θymoz – Breed (front)

Breed

Antonio Albanello is the musical mind behind the cryptically named project Θymoz. Over three decades his work has appeared in waves, oscillating between pop and experimental practice. Since the 1980s he has launched and produced numerous pop/rock projects (The Men, Albanello), joined the cult Bern group Dnjepr, and created concepts for sound installations and theatre music. He also performs live electronics as ozmoZ. Increasingly, his songs seek to fuse electronic and organic sound worlds. For Θymoz, Albanello gathers long-time collaborator Marco Maria, drummer Manuel Pasquinelli, pianist Maja Nydegger, and sound engineer Chris Diggelmann into a close-knit ensemble. The album Breed emerged gradually, in several phases. It began in Albanello’s studio, but disruptive construction noise set the project on a one-and-a-half-year journey: working from a mobile setup around Bern, by the North Sea, and in Berlin. Each stop generated new material and progressively finer sound-shaping. Many traditional elements were discarded; conventional song structures were deliberately corroded. Recording sessions in Bern’s Heiliggeistkirche (Church of the Holy Spirit) then blended the parts into a whole—braiding baroque organ, grand piano, percussion and the vast acoustic space into the fabric of the electronic narratives. The result is a boldly experimental atmosphere. Across ten pieces, the voice is restrained and the texts are brief—lyrical, metaphorical asides that evoke transience, loss, sleepless states and fractures. Breed does not chase perfection: its detailed soundscapes, subtle polyrhythms and hand-made textures reveal their fault lines by design. Yet moments of luminous beauty break through the melancholy—melody, rhythm and layered planes cutting cleanly across the veil.
