Album cover: The Faranas feat. Baba Salah - Run Run (front)

Run Run

Eight Bern-based musicians join forces with legendary Malian guitarist Baba Salah and Senegalese singer-percussionist Mory Samb to deliver Run Run: a high-energy blend of traditional West African rhythms, modern Malian music, and a healthy dose of Afrobeat. Founded in 2003 by vibraphonist Dominik Alig as an Afrobeat venture, the band’s deep pocket—driven by Fabian Bürgi (drums) and Toni Schiavano (bass)—evolved from early Fela covers into a distinctive, big-band groove. Since 2009, Mory Samb’s griot-rooted voice has shaped the group’s sound; the debut Who Are You? (2011) earned wide acclaim. The missing puzzle piece was Baba Salah. Rehearsals in Ouagadougou sparked an immediate chemistry: his bold, melodic guitar slips seamlessly into the arrangements, amplifying the group’s power. Traditional song “Djoreydje” sits naturally alongside Samb’s lyrics—songs of respect, solidarity, and perseverance—underscoring a style that is at once urban and deeply rooted. Mixed in Berlin and Barcelona with Ben Abarbanel-Wolff and Jochen Ströh (Lovelite Studio), Run Run carries the clarity and punch of classic ’70s African productions. The result is music that’s kinetic, danceable, and richly narrative—a Swiss Pan-African statement forged across borders.
