Cambodia, the debut album by Vienna duo rotterdam, distills a decade of experimentation into a stark, hypnotic statement. Far from convention or verse–chorus forms, Susanne Amann (cello, flute, electronics) and Michael Klauser (acoustic guitar, electronics) build constantly pulsing patterns that draw strength from the compression and interplay of small sonic elements. Mastered in Berlin by Stefan Betke (Scape) and Kassian Troyer, the music is pared to essentials: minimalist beats, repetitive loops, and deftly placed samples fuse with acoustic timbres to form instrumental sound paintings—mesmerizing, and at times danceable.
